Description A Dutch Nieuwe Kunst carved and painted oak sideboard,Probably Haarlem School, ca. 1900, Netherlands,Decorated overall with carved and painted stylised marsh-marigolds (or kingcups), inlaid fluting and geometric shapes, and pronounced pegs, the rectangular cornice above a monogram `KW` and a single panelled door, opening to reveal a plain interior with one shelf, flanked by two curved supports, above a buffet with a single drawer and a pair of panelled doors, the plain interior with one shelf, together with three keys monogrammed `JH`. This piece of furniture is emblematic of the teaching methods implemented in schools of applied arts and drawing in the period 1895-1900, represented at the Haarlemse School voor Kunstnijverheid by teachers such as T.K.L. Sluyterman and M. Duco Crop, and at the Kunstnijverheidsschool Quellinus in Amsterdam by J.B. Heukelom. Around the turn of the century, students in these schools would draw after nature by taking field trips in the surrounding area, and would use method books with stylised renditions of plants and animals. They would learn to translate these forms into a decorative system on a two-dimensional plane, thus arriving at an often symmetrical scheme that could be applied on pieces of furniture, tile panels, metalware, wallpapers and fabrics. In fact, the ornaments used on the panelled doors of the sideboard in this auction bear a striking resemblance to a decorative drawing made by J. van Amstel when he was a student at the above-mentioned school in Haarlem from 1893 onwards. The plant in the drawing is rendered in the same manner as in the decorative scheme of the sideboard, showing the flower heads and leaves `en profil` (fanning out) and `en face`. This drawing by Van Amstel is part of the collection of Het Nieuwe Instituut (HNI) Rotterdam, and can be viewed in their online database.
