USA - Exceptional collection of 4900 postcards of the Detroit Publishing Co. Around 1900-1930. Assembled in 13 mod. albums. - The extremely extensive collection comprises almost 5000 postcards of the renowned publishing company, which was founded at the end of the 19th century by the publisher William A. Livingstone and the photographer Edwin H. Husher as the Detroit Photographic Company. It was later renamed The Detroit Photochrom Company before becoming the Detroit Publishing Company in 1905. The postcards bear the note on the verso "Phostint card. Made only by Detroit Publishing Co." Phostint was the name used by Detroit Publishing from 1907 for a lithographic process used to produce the cards. It was originally developed in Switzerland, where it was known as Photochrom. Detroit either refined the process or simply changed the name after licensing it from the Swiss company Orell Füssli. Photo printers at the time had not yet developed a CMYK process to create the illusion of a full colour card. Instead, each colour had to be printed separately. Detroit used between eight and twenty different colours on each card. In the 1912 "Catalog for Postcard Sets from Detroit Publishing Company, Little `Phostint` Journeys" the company wrote: "`Phostint` is the brand of quality in picture post cards. Experienced travellers ask for cards made by the `Phostint` Process, because they find in them truthfulness and delicacy of colour, taste in pictorial composition, discrimination in choice of subject, and appreciation of beauty and educational values." By the time of the WWI, the company was facing declining sales due to both the wartime economy and competition from cheaper, more advanced printing processes. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1924 and was dissolved in 1932. - Contains wonderful views of almost every state, of both cities with important buildings and places and famous landscapes. Among them numerous views of the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone, important cities like San Francisco incl. Chinatown, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Atlantic City, Buffalo, Detroit. Particularly noteworthy are the numerous depictions of Native Americans with important representatives and tribal chiefs. Furthermore, views from Mexico, Cuba, Bahamas, Puerto Rico as well as numerous depictions of ships. Contains also a few postcards from the company C.T. Bodwell, ca. 1938. - With a few duplicates. Some cards posted and with annotations in the motif. Partly with minimal traces of wear. Colours very well preserved. Unique collection. Husher als Detroit Photographic Company ins Leben gerufen wurde. Später wurde sie in The Detroit Photochrom Company umbenannt, bevor sie 1905 zur Detroit Publishing Company wurde. Die Postkarten tragen verso den Vermerk "Phostint card. Made only by Detroit Publishing Co." Phostint war der Name, den Detroit Publishing ab 1907 für ein lithographisches Verfahren zu Herstellung der Karten verwendete. Zur Zeit des Ersten Weltkriegs sah sich das Unternehmen mit rückläufigen Umsätzen konfrontiert, was sowohl auf die Kriegswirtschaft als auch auf die Konkurrenz durch billigere, fortschrittlichere Druckverfahren zurückzuführen war. Das Unternehmen meldete 1924 Konkurs an und wurde 1932 aufgelöst. - Enthält wunderbare Ansichten aus nahezu allen Bundesstaaten, von sowohl Städten mit wichtigen Gebäuden und Plätzen als auch berühmten Landschaften. Darunter zahlr. Ansichten des Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone, wichtige Städte wie u.a. San Francisco inkl. Chinatown, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Atlantic City, Buffalo, Detroit. Besonders hervorzuheben sind die zahlreichen Darstellungen amerikanischer Ureinwohner mit wichtigen Vertretern und Stammesoberhäuptern. Ferner Ansichten aus Mexiko, Kuba, Bahamas, Puerto Rico sowie zahlreiche Darstellungen von Schiffen. Zudem einige wenige Postkarten der Firma C.T. Bodwell, ca. 1938. - Enthält einige wenige Doubletten. Vereinzelte Karten gelaufen und mit hs. Annotation im Motiv. Teils mit minimalen Gebrauchsspuren. Farben sehr schön erhalten. Einzigartige Sammlung.
