龙泉窑在宋元之际将中国青瓷工艺推向历史巅峰，不仅是依靠娴熟烧造温润如玉之釉色，更是在雕塑艺术上日臻工巧，创烧出一批生动形象之佛道人物塑像。元代元世祖信仰藏传佛教，将藏传佛教视为国教，于是在全国范围内广建寺庙，塑造佛像。同时景德镇和龙泉窑也烧造了优质之瓷胎佛像，如释迦牟尼佛像、观音菩萨像等。观音佛龛便是在这种背景下产生的。
