以象为供，千年传承，寓“太平有象”，指时事安宁平和，形容河清海晏、民康物阜，至为吉祥。象曲鼻大耳；鞍上驮一老者，自在而坐，手托宝珠。古时，先民曾驯养并用象为耕地之牲；《白虎通》称：“象者，象太平而作，示已太平”；《汉书·礼乐志》云：“象来致福。”它亦是佛教普贤菩萨的坐骑，顺柔而有大威力。清朝，典仪制度中颇见其重要性：《钦定大清会典事例》载，“陈大驾卤簿，前列导象四”、宝象五、金辂驾象一、玉辂驾象一。
