灵璧石产自安徽省灵璧县，自古以来便被誉为四大赏石之首。《尚书·禹贡》中提到的“泗滨浮磬”，即灵璧石之一种的磬石。南宋绍兴三年，杜绾所撰《云林石谱》汇载石品一百一十六种，灵璧石被放在首位介绍；明人文震亨《长物志》：“灵璧石出凤阳府宿州灵璧县，在深山沙土中，掘之乃见，有细白纹如玉。不起岩岫。佳者如卧牛、蟠螭，种种异状，真奇品也。”可见历代文人雅士对灵璧石的喜爱。此石形势奇伟，“皱、瘦、漏、透”诸品皆俱，如飞来仙峰，虽罅隙满身，似刀劈斧砍，浑然天成，质朴清远，从容庄严。更难得的是，扣之拂之，声音余韵悠长，玉振金声。
