秦汉时建筑宫殿用的砖瓦，多采用澄泥制法，后来有人用这些砖瓦改制为砚。唐朝吴融《古砚瓦赋》中描述：“无谓乎柔而无刚，土埏而为瓦；勿谓乎废而不用，瓦断而为砚”。
清代早期文人嗜好金石，此砚便以瓦当之形为之。砚缘宽厚，砚面开阔，光素无纹，以彰显朴稚之美。砚背铜镜式瓦当形制，采用浮雕技法雕琢，中央圆钮为中心，鼓钉环绕一周，主体纹饰为“长生无极”篆书瓦当文。
整器造型古朴沉稳，包浆厚重，设计新颖，构思巧妙，纹饰层次分明，雕刻精细，体现了古代文人雅士好古之风。
