Important wooden sculpture of Buddha Amithabha, probably Song(960-1279) or Jin dynasty(1125-1234) 12th century, wooden figure(chin. yimuzao/jap. ichibokuzukuri) carved in one piece with polychrome setting, of hauntingly serene aesthetics, the compassionate Buddha Amitabha(chin.Emituofo) gazes from his western paradise(skrt.sukhavati) on the world of suffering beings, the sublime majesty of the softly rounded face with full lips, brow arches over conch-shell-shaped eyes and slightly accentuated nose seems as elegant, like the hair splendor constructed from pointed curls with ushnisha skull outgrowth and shining jewel as well as the finely composed karana-mudra of the right hand and the whole swinging-loaded drapery of the monkish robe on the majestically formed Buddha body, which finds grounding in its sublime compactness by the lotus sitting position (skrt. padmasana), recess for relics in the back, age-related shrinkage of the barrel layer, 46x33x17cm
