The design contains images of Chinese furniture which would have been almost entirely unfamiliar to a Westerner, unlike a handsome Export punch bowl bearing a European subject of a carousing party or a fox hunt, or even recording the Canton 'Hongs' waterfront. If this bowl was made for a Westerner, it must have been a unique Special Commission. The furniture designs are depicted with some care and may have been copied from Canton School albums of gouache paintings, sets of which often showed (possibly semi-accurately) domestic Chinese interiors for the edification of foreigners.
