Description Joseph Wopfner (Austria 1843-1927) small oil on board painting titled "Fischer von der Fraeuninsel" or "Fishermen from the Fraeuninsel" depicting a group of figures in a fishing boat floating in a lake with a small village in the background under a cloudy sky. Signed "J. Wopfner, 1922" lower right corner. Housed in a carved giltwood and painted frame with corner decoration. German label affixed en verso. 4 1/2" H x 6" W. Framed: 7 3/4" H x 9 1/4" W. Note: This work is featured in Josef Wopfner's Catalogue Raisonne by Irmgard Holz and Alexander Rauch, Figure 722, page 251.Biographical Note: Josef Wopfner is celebrated for his paintings of the Bavarian regions of the Oberland and the Chiemsee, both popular destinations for Munich-based painters like Wopfner. In their moods, Wopfner's landscapes are often meditative and Wopfner himself wanted to be known as a "Holy Painter." His work borders on impressionism in his loose application of paint and gestural brushwork, and many of his paintings are based on drawings made en plein air.
