A pair of Chinese Lac-Burgauté plaques, 18th century, inlaid with scenes relating to Xi Wangmu and Liu Ling and with related inscriptions on the reverse reading 蟠桃一熟三千年 (The fairy peach is ready for harvesting every 3000 years) and the second line is: 天生刘伶酒为名 (Liu Ling was born to love wine), overall size including wood frame 27 x 15cm (2) The legend is connected with Xi Wangmu, who had a peach grove where different qualities of peaches ripen at different times, some every 500 years, some every 1000 years and the best every 3000 years. Liu Ling (221-300) was a Chinese poet and one of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. Provenance: ‘Mr. Ko’ acquired these in Peking on 3rd September 1924 and then by direct family descent.
