此摆件圆雕一大两小三只羊，呈卧伏形状，大羊背驮书卷，两只小羊，嬉戏在大羊身两侧，生动而富有情趣。以三羊作器，俗称“三羊开泰”。古时羊与“祥”通，取吉祥之意。羊亦通“阳”，祝吉语有“三阳开泰”，语出《易经》：“正月为泰卦，三阳生于下”。后人因阳、羊同音，用三羊代表三阳，取其冬去春来，阴消阳长，有吉亨之象，多用于岁首祝颂之辞。
