Colorful, large, well painted Japanese porcelain charger with visually stunning designs of a dragon, phoenix, and a Japanese castle. It’s like a brocade pattern on porcelain. Large, thinly potted, hand thrown, and hand painted porcelain charger with a slight raised edge. The design has large panels with a dragon after the pearl of wisdom, a view of a castle with bird and tree, and a phoenix in flight. These panels are surrounded with cherry trees in bloom. The designs have been painted in red, green, gray, turquoise, and gold over glaze enamels with black used to accent and outline. The underside has been painted with under glaze cobalt flowers the petals of which are painted in over glaze red. There is also a lip ring of cobalt under glaze blue. The rim edge has a fine line of gold. The charger has a slight foot with an unglazed foot ring. There is a central sager mark on the glazed base. You can see the potter’s wheel rings under the base glaze. The glaze is fairly white, thick, and soft feeling. MEASUREMENTS 12 ¼” (31.1 cm) diameter x 1 7/16” (3.7 cm) tall. Weighs 2 lb 2.3 oz (970 g) CONDITION There are no chips, cracks, or breaks. The charger rings like a bell. There is wear to the gilt rim edge, a whisker on the dragon and the bird in the tree. There are wear scratches to the dragon’s body. The charger enamels are still bright and colorful. A visually exciting work of the Japanese potter’s art. The charger will brighten any room and will be seen from a distance.
