This lovely and delicate early plate is and has an arcaded rim and an inner border of molded basket weave. It is line-engraved in a grey blue in the "Elephant" pattern. The 8-1/4" earthenware plate dates c. 1792-1803. It was made by John & William Turner. John Turner of Lane End, Longton, Staffordshire was one of the earliest potters to make blue & white printed pottery. When he died in 1787 the firm was continued by his two sons, William and John. There is some slight damage to the edge on the rim (see photo). There are 3 spur marks on the back. There are no large chips or cracks, and no repairs. The finish is nice and glossy with no utensil scratches. The plate is impressed "TURNER" (Godden's mark 3896) and the numeral "5".
