This plate dates from long ago, the first half of the 19th cent. From the early 1800s until well into the 1900's, virtually every French home had at least one set of this sort of dessert plate. These plates provided 'entertainment' to the table after a traditionally long and copious meal. This plate is exceptionally old...dating from to from between about 1825 to about 1835. We can be certain about the date range because the impressed mark (Montereau...only the 'au' shows but we know by the border that this is indeed the maker c.1830) found on the back along with the style of this plate and the hard paste porcelain from which it was made, date it to this early period for Rebus plates. This plates feature a 'Rebus' theme or picture puzzles which when worked out make a Wise Saying or 'maxim'. This was one of the earliest themes for this type of plate. Early makers of this type of plate would include Creil, Montereau, Creil et Montereau (when those two merged), L & T (Leboeuf et Thibaut) also associated with Creil, Gien, and H B & cie of Choisy-le-Roi. For a plate of this age, nearly 200 years, this plate is in a rare and remarkably excellent Antique Condition withs no cracks, chips, discoloration or knife marks. This plates measures approx. 8 1/2 inches (22 cms) in diameter. ++We have more of these plates.
