提要：作者鉴于蒙古氏族颇费稽考，史籍所载，音既不正，又多互异，乃据陶宗仪《辍耕录》所列蒙古72种，色目31种，广搜博采正史、杂史，旁及碑刻、文集、题名录等书中有关资料，考其得失，审其异同，仿《唐书·宰相世系表》体例，取其谱系可考者列为表，疑者缺之。积近30年之精力始成此书，是前人补订《元史》表志著作中最有成就，参考价值最高之一种。
