釉里红烧造自元代而始，从未间断、停息，几乎贯穿整个明清时期，盖以纯氧化铜作呈色剂，对烧造气氛与窑温极为苛刻。火候偏低，氧化铜呈现黑色；随温度升高，则渐次呈现绿色、绿红色、红色等不同状态；火候稍过，铜离子又立即挥发，产生飞红、退色等现象，致使纹饰模糊亦不连贯，极大程度影响装饰效果，故釉里红发色极不稳定，成器之难度显而易见。
