Carved entirely from a single piece of greenish-white jade, this imperial jade archaistic "hinge fitting" is truly a rarity. Its ancient-style design harkens back to prototypes from the Han Dynasty. The design comprises two rectangular tube sections, both hollowed to the center on one end. Each tube features an end circle carved to either side, forming a discs and enabling a smaller jade to connect the two tubes. This, along with a central pin, forms the "hinge fitting" allowing the tubes to move in tandem with each other. They can be oriented as flush sitting against one another or open forming a elongated link.
Regarding the carved decoration of this work of art, the entire exterior is highly worked in low relief; featuring beast-face motifs, cloud scrolls, and ruyi patterns. The jade itself is of similar quality to that of ancient jade artifacts. During the early Qing period, the requirements for jade quality were lower, sensitive to the difficulty in obtaining the material; however the expectation of craftsmanship was strictly required. According to the archives of the Qing imperial household department, there was a record of a "Han jade double-tube flower vase" in the collection of eunuch Du Shoujiao in the third year of Emperor Yongzheng (1725) at the Yuanmingyuan Palace, which may refer to this work. The clear skill and precision in this piece represent the highest artistry of craftsmen who worked for the imperial court in the 18th century. Similar jade artifacts of the same style and finish are treasured for their rarity in several notable museum collections.
