谭云山(1898-1983)湖南省茶陵县下东长乐人，印度总理英迪拉·甘地夫人称之为"伟大学者" 。被誉为"现代玄奘" 。青年时代在湖南第一师范学校参加了***创办的"新民学会"和"新文化书社"。民国13年(1924)赴新加坡和马来西亚任教。1928年接受印度诗圣泰戈尔的邀请去印度国际大学任教。1937年首任印度国际大学中国学院院长。1956年***总理访印时，参观该学院，称赞他为促进中印文化交流作出了贡献。
