Wendy Ramshaw (1939-2018)Maquette for a double screen installation at the Victoria & Albert Museum, 1996Steel, wooden baseUnsigned44.5cm high, 58cm wideReferenceVictoria & Albert Museum object details:"This maquette was made as part of the design process of a screen titled EH 9681 (M.83-1997), designed by Wendy Ramshaw and commissioned by the V&A for the new Staff Restaurant. It was installed in 1997. The letters and number EH 9681 refer to the code given by the Sheffield steel mill at the point of manufacture. The commission was part of a larger project; the conversion of the former Royal College of Art Studios into new conservation studios, Museum offices and staff restaurant.'The abstract design is intended to look as if it is a huge drawing standing firmly within its environment- static but filled with suggestive movement.' Wendy Ramshaw, Crafts Magazine Jan- Feb 1998'All the wonderful objects in this marvelous museum make the task of designing any work which is to become a part of the structure of the building a very considerable undertaking. I based the drawing for the screen on an animated sketch I had once made for a brooch. The lines within the frame of the screen still retain a sense of movement, further emphasised as you walk past'.
