He was the son of Zhang Zuolin, a powerful warlord in Northeast China, and became a prominent military commander in his own right. He is best known for his role in the Xi'an Incident in 1936, where he kidnapped Chiang Kai-shek, the leader of the Nationalist government, in an attempt to force him to form a united front with the Chinese Communist Party against the Japanese invasion.
