Ce motif d'arabesque bleu et blanc, qui dérive de prototypes timourides, a été vu pour la première fois sur le Dôme du Rocher à Jérusalem, carrelé sur les instructions du sultan ottoman vers 1545, mais peu après, des carreaux similaires sont apparus sur de nombreux édifices publics et privés à Alep. La mosquée Ramanazoglu, à Adana (Turquie), possède également des carreaux presque identiques.
