Bronze with an iridescent brownish-black patina. Accurate depiction of a mighty striding tiger, its maw wide open. Signed "BARYE" on the right of the stepped plinth and "F. BARBEDIENNE Fondeur" on the left. In excellent condition. Height 21.5, length 41 cm. Even during his lifetime, Antoine-Louis Barye (1795 - 1875) achieved fame as a sculptor in Paris. He was instrumental in animal sculpture's emergence as a modern means of expression. Some of his works can still be found in prestigious international museums. Along with most French sculptors of his time, Barye worked in Paris under the tutelage of the famous gallery owner and bronze caster Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810 - 1892). Condition: I -
