An astrolabe, the instrument of a circular frame, with a flaring finial and piercing at the top and at the centre; holds within it seven discs that come together to form a complex and fascinating tool. The surface of each disc is etched with geometrical figures and formulas, bordered by a measuring band. Astrolabes were highly valued in the Islamic world, where they were used for both scientific and religious purposes, including determining the times of prayer and the direction of Mecca for Muslims.
