Symbolizing sacred love, the couple share an intimate embrace as Parvati sits on the lap of the multi-armed Shiva. In turn, Shiva is supported by his bull, Nandi, whereas Parvati rests atop her lion mount. A Nepalese image of Vishnu and Lakshmi, which was sold at Christie's, New York, 22 March 2011, lot 95, shares its elongated limbs and figural modeling with the present work.
