A Fine and Large Pair of Japanese Imari Jars and Covers, c.1700, of baluster form, the sides strikingly decorated in a dark inky blue combined with iron red and good gilding, with three large fan shaped landscape panels depicting houses and trees among mist, all within flower scroll and vignette borders, the lids similarly decorated, H:60cm.,one vase in good condition, the other with glaze crack to interior and with repaired cover knop, otherwise good . Footnote: Japanese vases in this ‘brocade style’ (‘nishiki-de’) of Imari were a luxury product, greatly in demand for European palaces in the baroque period, even by kings and princes. Similar examples in this sumptuous and splendid Japanese Export style can be seen both in the Dresden collection, the Johanneum, put together in the early 18th century by the redoubtable Augustus the Strong, the Elector of Saxony, and also in the British Royal Collection.
