A VERY LARGE GILT-LACQUERED WOOD STATUE OF YOUNG BUDDHA RIDING QILINChina, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Depicting Buddha as a young boy, bejeweled and wearing elaborately decorated garments, his bald head is accentuated by a single braided strand of hair that gently falls on his forehead. Showing sensitively crafted facial features, with one hand grasping Qilin´s horn and the other holding a bead, the Qilin beneath with the head turned to one side, the scales and tail finely carved, the face with a friendly expression and inlaid glass eyes. Set on a rectangular stand, featuring openwork friezes on each side and supported by four elegant splaying feet. The figure is covered in gilt lacquer with a red-lacquered layer underneath.Condition: Overall good condition with few age cracks, small losses, chips, and glaze flakes, some of which show old touchups.
