A THANGKA OF SADAKSHRI AVALOKITESHVARA, c. 1900sTibet, c. 1900s. Distemper on cloth. Depicting the bodhisattva seated on a lotus throne, holding the lotus and a mala, and displaying the gesture of greeting with her four hands, surrounded by a divine entourage and bodhisattvas. All set in in his paradise, Mount Potalaka in the South Indian Sea. Framed by a fine brocade mounting and with protective silk cover.The thangka depicts Avalokiteshvara as the personification of the mantra om mani padme hum ('hail to the jewel in the lotus'). This ubiquitous Tibetan mantra is thought to contain the essence of the bodhisattva, the lord of compassion.Condition: With wear, minor creasing, and soiling, overall good condition.
