A STONE STELE OF A TIRTHANKARA, 16th – 17th CENTURYIndia, Gujarat or Rajasthan, 16th - 17th century. A stone stele of the Jain Thirtankara, probably Ṛṣabhanatha, the first of twenty-four Tīrthaṃkaras or Jinas commonly depicted in Jain iconography. The Jina is shown seated in the posture of meditation (dhyanamudra) and covered by a triple chatra, the sun-umbrella and one of the fourteen gems (ratna) serving the Cakravartin, flanked by his yakṣa Gomukha and his yakṣi Cakresvari. Condition: Broken in two pieces and reattached, with wear, losses, and signs of weathering. Provenance: French private collection, acquired in the Dutch auction market.
