A VIETNAMESE GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF BUDDHA AND A PAIR OF BUDDHIST LIONSVietnam, 19th century. The Buddha depicted standing on a lotus base, the right hand lowered and the left holding a bowl, wearing long flowing robes opening at the chest, the serene face with heavy-lidded eyes and full lips, flanked by long earlobes, the hair arranged in tight curls surmounted by an ushnisha. Each Buddhist lion seated on its haunches atop a high rectangular base carved with a geometric pattern to each side, with large bulging eyes, a broad ruyi-shaped nose and thickly curling mane and brows. Condition: With weathering, minor losses, and extensive wear to lacquer including flakes. The figure of Buddha with age cracks. Provenance: Private collection in Paris, France.
