此盒为长方形，倭角，拥有宫廷御用器物富丽堂皇之气派。本品采用洋漆技法制成，日本称之为“莳绘”。通体以黑漆为基色，盒面以金漆描绘云龙戏珠纹饰，红漆点缀灵动的火焰纹。双龙上方红色方框内书：“御题泽古怡情”六字三行篆书。盒壁描绘金彩祥云纹。本品绘画之精美，装饰之华丽，堪称旷世杰作。据考，乾隆五十六年（1791）春，陕西巡抚毕沅向乾隆帝进献了一方古墨。此墨正是历史上有名的五代时期南唐李廷珪所制的“泽古怡情”墨。乾隆皇帝素来酷爱书法，对毕沅所献李墨视若至宝，喜爱有加，兴奋之际写下了御制诗文《御制墨云室记并李廷珪古墨歌》，特地为此墨制作“泽古怡情”墨匣。
