口沿微内敛，斜壁，小圈足，因为形似斗笠，也叫斗笠盏。 至于胎土，吉州窑胎质中含砂量大，使胎质粗松吸水力强，粗看似陶，但敲之具金属声的特征。同时，玳瑁釉属于窑变釉，可控性低，成本高昂，名贵一时。但由于元明以来饮茶习惯由点茶法向泡茶法过渡，服务于斗茶的玳瑁茶盏便渐失用武之地，而随着天下瓷业“景德镇一家独大”格局的到来，古吉州窑整体趋于衰落，玳瑁工艺也随之失传。
