(Jim) Joel (3) Footnotes: Charles "Snaffles" Johnson Payne (1884–1967) was an English author-painter known for his humorous work and for his outstanding draughtsman and depiction of the horse in action. This book and its title was inspired by Rudyard Kipling's poem "Shillin' a Day" from Barrack-Room Ballads, first published in the Scots Observer in 1890 and later collated into Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses in 1892. It is to Rudyard Kipling's (R. K.) daughter Elsie Bambridge that the inscription in this volume refers. H. J.
