A LARGE SCHIST FRIEZE DEPICTING A BANQUET, ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA, KUSHAN PERIOD
2nd-4th century. Finely carved, the frieze depicts a banquet scene above a decorative lotus band along the base. Robed men and women stand side by side, some with their arms thrown over the other in a bacchanalian manner, holding drinking vessels and large branches.


Provenance:
Collection of David Lindahl, Kyoto, Japan, 1996. A private collection in Monaco, acquired from the above in London. A copy of a signed statement, dated 28 September 2018 and confirming the provenance above, accompanies this lot.

Condition:
Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, losses, signs of weathering and erosion, minor structural cracks, some with old fills. Chips, nicks, scratches, encrustations.
