A RARE TWO-COLOR CINNABAR LACQUER YAOPEI HANGING ORNAMENT, QING DYNASTY
Experts note:
This rare lacquer yaopei was likely intended to decorate the waist belt. Hanging ornaments like the present lot and are an essential element of Hanfu jewelry and appear in Chinese depictions of female deities such as Magu as well as maidens and beauties.
China, 1644-1912. Finely carved to one side with a smiling Magu standing on neatly incised waves, surrounded by swirling waves against a black diapered key-fret ground, her robes and scarves billowing in the wind, and to the other with a scholar beside his body attendant fanning him, framed by clouds and trees, against diapered square, wave, and key-fret grounds, the short sides carved with diapered wan designs.

Expected old wear, some manufacturing flaws, a few nicks and small losses, minuscule natural cracks.

Of quadrilobed rectangular form, the ornament pierced through the top and bottom, the aperture to the top with an oval fitting and the one to the bottom with a rectangular fitting, both carved from organic material.
