A LARGE CELADON AND RUSSET JADE ‘MONKEYS AND PEACHES’ BRUSH WASHER, XI, 17TH-18TH CENTURY
China. The deep vessel naturalistically carved in openwork to form a giant peach with three monkeys climbing playfully around gnarled branches with fruiting smaller peaches encircling the sides, the fruit and leaves neatly incised and well detailed. The smoothly polished translucent stone is of a deep celadon hue with dark gray and black shadings, russet patches and veins, as well as cloudy inclusions.


Provenance:
From an English private collection.

Condition:
Very good condition with minor old wear, scattered small nibbles, and minuscule nicks. The stone with natural inclusions and fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks.

This work recalls the folk legend
of an impish stone monkey who came to life and brazenly stole the peaches of immortality from the ruler of heaven, the Jade Emperor.

十七至十八世紀青玉留皮猴子摘桃筆洗

中國。青玉質，青中透白，質透瑩，隨形浮雕山石，中間掏膛而成為筆洗。山石上雕刻桃樹一株，盤幹虯枝，枝上掛著蟠桃，另雕三猴攀援其間，作摘桃之勢，猴子鏤空圓雕並用，上中下三方佈局，動態十足。光滑拋光的半透明玉石呈深青色，帶有深灰色和黑色陰影、黃褐色斑塊和紋理，以及絮狀物。

品相：
狀況非常好，有輕微磨損、局部有刻痕、小磕損。玉料有天然内沁和裂隙，有的已發展成細小的裂紋。
