A BLUE AND WHITE ‘BAMBOO’ BEAKER VASE, KANGXI PERIOD
China, 1662-1722. Naturalistically modeled as a bamboo stalk with four segments divided by raised ridges, each segment finely decorated to the exterior in shades of cobalt blue with blossoms including lotus, peony, and chrysanthemum surrounded by leafy scroll, framed by triple line borders, the interior of the rim decorated with a hatched band. The recessed base with an artemisia mark.

: Dutch trade.

Condition
: A chip to the mouth with associated old repair, a hairline to the rim, the glaze with intentional crackling, some of which has developed into short glaze lines. Minor fritting and tiny chips to the foot.

Expert’s note:
During the early Qing dynasty, up until the early 1680s, conditions were unsettled in China and the making of Imperial wares as well as the use of reign marks on porcelain was restricted in various ways. During this period, different types of marks came into use, including artemisia leaf marks.

康熙青花卷葉花卉紋花觚
