A SET OF BRONZE SWORDS, EASTERN ZHOU TO EARLY HAN DYNASTY
China, 3rd-2nd century BC. Each with a scalloped cross-section and edge, the swords are slightly waisted to the point with a pronounced median ridge. The handles have two rings on the grip and are without pommels. One sword shows a vibrant malachite green patina, while the other is of a rather dark green color overall.
Provenance:
From the personal collection of Michael B. Weisbrod, New York. The fitted box has an old auction label, ’19 MAR 97. Sale 8602. Lot 179.’ Michael B. Weisbrod is a noted scholar of Chinese art, who has published extensively on the subject over a time span of more than 50 years. In 1972, Michael joined his father Dr. Gerald Weisbrod’s Asian art gallery in Toronto, Canada. The father-and-son team opened their New York location on Madison Avenue in 1977, and during the next 45 years the gallery held a significant number of exhibitions, selling to museums and private collectors across the globe, eventually adding further locations in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
Condition:
Good condition, commensurate with age. Expected signs of weathering and erosion corresponding to an extended period of burial. Losses, chips, metal flaking due to fatigue, soil encrustations, and remnants of ancient pigment.
