佛门传说，虎溪在庐山东林寺前，相传晋僧慧远居东林寺时，送客不过溪。一日陶潜（陶渊明）、道士陆修静来访，与语甚契，相送时不觉过溪，虎辄号鸣，三人大笑而别。后人于此建三笑亭。唐英（1682-1756年）题庐山东林寺三笑亭联云：桥跨虎溪，三教三源流，三人三笑语；莲开僧舍，一花一世界，一叶一如来。
