Greek, Attic late 6th cent. B.C. Clay, added red.
H. 7 19/32 in; 19.3 cm
Slender perfume vessel with a distinctly offset shoulder decorated with a frieze of hanging lotus buds connected by fine, intertwined lines. In the centre of the picture field, two muscular, naked boxers with fists wrapped in straps and standing with their feet apart are engaged in a fight. To the left and right, a referee wearing a long cloak and holding a lance. A naked youth on the left comments on the action. All figures stand on a fine ground line. Details on buds and robes accentuated in added red. Interior and exterior of mouth, exterior of handle, lower body of the vessel and top of the foot glazed black. Scenes with boxers were a popular subject on vases of various shapes in the period.
Partially misfired to a reddish hue. Reassembled from large fragments; the figures on the left retouched; some hairline cracks filled in; a fragment at the foot restored.
Formerly Coll. Sybille Rosenbaum-Kroeber, Ascona. Thereafter priv. coll. Dr. Frank Hieronymus (1930-2022), Basel; acquired 11.11.2012 from Galleria Serodine, Ascona.
