是帖为唐久视元年（700）武则天率群臣巡游中岳嵩山，避暑石淙河，大宴群臣时所作。武则天即兴作《夏日游石淙》诗一首，命从臣李显、李旦、武三思、狄仁杰等16人奉和诗，名为《侍游应制》。命薛曜书写，让良匠刻于崖壁上，通篇字体挺瘦秀润，融会贯通，开宋人“瘦金体”之先河。武则天在此宴请群臣一事，两唐《书武后本纪》失载，此碑可补其阙。诗作已收入《全唐诗》，刻本文字稍异，以碑刻为是。
