是石原刻在镇江焦山西麓石壁上，北宋年间被发现，经欧阳修《集古录》著录后名声大显。清代康熙间，苏州知府陈鹏年募工打捞残石，得86字。后按前人考证的石刻铭文进行复位后，置于焦山定慧寺，并建亭保护。此碑文字气势宏逸，神态飞动，历代文人书法家评价甚高。北宋黄庭坚曾有“大字无过《瘗鹤铭》”的赞誉。
