此器方形素面，灰地黑花玛瑙，柔润透亮，打磨滑如丝，黑花玛瑙，干净亮透，纹理清晰，器形厚薄均匀，极见功力。《格古要论》（曹昭［明］撰写）书成于洪武二十一年（1388），书中记载“玛瑙多出北方，南蕃、西蕃亦有，非石非玉坚而且脆，快刀刮不动，凡看碗盏器皿要样范好，碾得薄不夹石者为佳”。玛瑙在古代价值珍贵，可与玉媲美，它坚固而脆，不易雕琢，凡琢得细致者，皆贵重之物。
