在我国历史上曾发生过数次农民起义运动，但规模最大影响最深的一次应该是由洪秀全发动领导的太平天国农民起义运动。太平军于癸丑三年（1853年）攻克南京（改称天京）之后，即开始铸造自己的货币。太平军的货币除初期名称为通宝外，其余均称为圣宝。圣字取意于耶稣为救世主的宗教纲领，故太平军的圣库、圣粮、圣兵等等多用“圣”字，钱币亦如此。
