光绪元宝北洋造是中国近代机制币中的十大名誉品之一，具有重要的现实意义和历史意义。它因钱币背面一般铸有龙纹而得名，俗称“龙洋”。北洋造光绪元宝的铸造始于1902年，由周学熙奉命筹办北洋银元局，旨在缓解当时的钱荒问题。北洋银元局的建立，标志着中国最早的机制币的诞生。该局首先铸造的是一两银币，即户部光绪元宝一两，但未发行。随后，北洋银元局开始铸造七钱二分银币，即北洋29七钱二分，只有一元这一种。北洋银元局的铸造活动一直持续到光绪三十三年，期间还铸造了库平一钱四分四厘的小银角等不同面值的银元。
