鸡血石由“地”和“血”两部组成。一般认为“血”的矿物成分主要是辰砂。“地”的成分，如昌化鸡血石，其“地”的矿物成分以粘土矿物中的地开石为主，也含有相当量的高岭石，明矾石、埃洛石、石英、黄铁矿等。在早期，古代文人雅士及官僚就采用鸡血石制作印章，是极富盛名的章料奇石。巴林鸡血石主要是高岭石和硬水铝石；而其质地较为细腻的黑冻鸡血石和芙蓉冻鸡血石的主要矿物成分为地开石和辰砂；前些年在吉林某金矿之顶部发现有近似“金顶红”的脉石英致密块体，其中辰砂非常细小，质地坚硬细腻，也是硬地含辰砂石料，当地称朱砂玉。
