此砚铜铸外壳，烧制以紫砂砚堂，太极式砚池。外壳兽形，称“虎符”。通体鎏金，嵌百宝珠装饰，珠光宝气，金彩华发。兽面，头生双角，怒目前视，列口露齿，四足伏地，肩生双翼，身披鳞甲，故名“虎伏”。底部铜胎处，青锈斑斑，甚有古意。盖内髹漆，金彩铭“武为兵符形，似虎意寓炳文，济其武坡云磨，雍可供书溪必，陶泓倅而许。乾隆御题。”虎符砚造型于《钦定四库全书》、《钦定西清砚谱》等皇家典籍均有著录，其形制似极蒙乾隆帝垂青，各砚均有乾隆御题诗。
