British mathematician, astronomer, and inventor (1792–1871) known for his discoveries related to the moons of Saturn and Uranus and for his pioneering work in early photographic processes, including coining the word 'photography' itself. ALS signed “J. F. W. Herschel,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7.25, August 1, 1841. Letter to a gentleman, in part: "My address is as above but any parcels if sent to the care of P. Stewart Esq., 65 Cornhill, or if left at the Royal Society will reach me in safety which (if not urgent in the point of time) is the mode I usually recommend, as our local conveyances are on a very inconvenient footing. It has not been in my power, I regret to say, to attend the meeting of the Institution of Civil Engineers since I had the honor to be placed on its list of Honorary Members nor was I aware that the signature of its Registers was required in the case of such members but the first opportunity I will make a point of supplying this deficiency." In fine condition, with creasing to the lower corners.
