Royalist statesman in Jersey and England, who served in the Clarendon Ministry as Treasurer of the Navy (c. 1610–1680). Rare manuscript DS, signed "G. Carteret" as Treasurer of the Navy, one page, 7.25 x 11.5, July 17, 1663. An order for “Seven thousand fifty-six pounds one shilling, & eight pence…for and towards the whole charge of four thousand men appointed for six months service at Sea." Signed in the right margin by Carteret. In very good condition, with light staining and soiling. Loyal to the Stuarts during the English Civil War, Carteret received ample grants of land in North America and was one of the proprietors for both the Carolinas and New Jersey. After the restoration of Charles II in 1660, Carteret won appointment as Treasurer of the Navy. Much of his career is documented in the famed diaries of Samuel Pepys, who joined him as Clerk of the Acts to the Navy Board in 1660. A scarce and exquisite document.
