Army officer (1892–1992) who served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, rising to the rank of commanding general of the US Army and other United Nations forces during the Korean War. Two items: a matte-finish 8 x 10 photo of Van Fleet in uniform, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To Ken Browne, With best wishes, James Van Fleet"; and a TLS, one page, Headquarters Eight United States Army letterhead, August 18, 1951, about the Korean War, in part: "Since my arrival here the Eighth Army has had two good fights with the Communists—in April and in May—and nothing would suit us more than to have a third and final round. I am confident that the enemy is in bad shape—has a defeated and depleted army, a destroyed country and a starving and diseased population. He is not in very good shape to go through another winter. Therefore, I feel that he wants peace and that there is a good hope of an armistice eventually. However, he is insolent, arrogant and stubborn at the armistice negotiations. The Eighth U.S. Army is made up of the finest youngsters America has ever produced. They seem to understand this Communist danger and are willing to do something about it. They have been well trained by our Army Replacement Training Centers in the States; they have a high morale in battle. We are all hoping that this terrible war can come to a peaceful and honorable end." In overall fine condition.
