1st century BC-1st century AD. A bronze harness pendant formed as a hexagonal shield with raised boss and concentric rings, loop to the upper edge. See Feugère, M. Weapons of the Romans, Stroud, 2002, fig.84 and p.76-8 for discussion. 7.55 grams, 57mm (2 1/4"). Found near Ludford, Lincolnshire, in 1985. The hexagonal shield with bronze or iron umbo was adopted by the Roman military from Gaulish prototypes. Very fine condition. Extremely rare.
